The story of: “Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates” contains a short story within the novel, about a Dutch boy who saves his country by putting his finger in a leaking dike. All through the night the boy continued his vigil despite the cold. Finally, the villagers arrive and rescue him and repair the dike. It seems like we in our own country face the danger of a different kind of flood. We are confronted every day with a flood of evil upon us. School shootings, drug addiction, violence, moral perversion, gender confusion, greed, vulgar language, political corruption, and a host of similar vices are heaped up around us like a flood. What are we as followers of Jesus supposed to do?
First of all, we need to remember not to despair. Jesus told us in John 16:33: “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”. By His death on the cross He broke the powers of evil. We do not have to remain victims but through Him we can become victorious over the power of evil around us.
Another thing we can do is to put our finger in the dike. The little Dutch boy did his part. We of course cannot do away with the flood of evil that is surging into our society, but we can put our finger in the part of the dike where we live. We can’t solve the problem of hunger in the world, but we can pass out food to those in our community. We can’t stop the moral revolution, but we can be involved in a ministry that teaches the next generation a biblical world view. We may not be able to stop the wickedness around us, but we can model a Christlike lifestyle in our own neighborhood.
One day the flood of evil will be halted for good. Revelation 20:10 tells us that the devil, the Prince of Evil, will be cast into the Lake of Fire forever. Until Jesus comes back and does away with all evil, may we do our part by putting a finger in the dike.
