One of the most popular talent shows on television began in 2002. “American Idol” is a singing competition that has launched the careers of people like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. A panel of judges critique the singers’ performances and vote whether they stay in the competition. American Idol has been ranked as the number one television show for many of its seasons.

In the book of Exodus, the nation of Israel having just escaped slavery in Egypt were gathered at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Moses climbed the mountain to commune with God and receive the 10 commandments. While he was gone for an extended period of time, the Israelites down below became bored and restless. They then demanded Aaron to give them something on which to focus their restless energy. He made them a golden calf. The Bible tells us that they sat down to eat and drink and rose up to party. They worshipped the golden calf, whereby breaking the first and second commandment. This idol replaced their love and loyalty to the invisible God.

We also have our golden calves. “American Idol” is not just a singing competition. It is also a graphic description of the priorities and passions of everyday Americans. We love our idols. What are the American idols that surround us? What are those things that steal our love and allegiance to the Lord God of heaven? Money, pleasure, and sex have become American idols. Seeking recognition, acquiring possessions, and pursuing exotic vacations can become our priorities in life. Drinking and partying and sports receive our passionate pursuit. All of these have become our golden calves, our American idols.

Jesus told us in Matthew 6:19-21; “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. One day all our American idols will turn to rust. Make Jesus Christ Lord of all and worship Him alone!
