Counting Our Riches

Perhaps we don’t like to admit it but most of us enjoy counting our money.  We often take stock of what we have.  We rejoice when our 401K is doing well.  We are thankful for the property we possess.  We are encouraged when our investments are prospering.  Yet some of God’s people have little in the form of material wealth to count.  The Bible directs us to count our riches.  But those riches may not take the form of money, property, or valuable possessions.  Our gold or silver may be non-existent.  The land we live on may belong to someone else and we may even be in debt.  How can we count our riches?

Proverbs 10:22 opens our eyes to a different form of riches.  It tells us: “The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it”. The child of God is rich beyond measure.  Eph. 1:3-7 lists some of those riches that God has blessed us with. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”.  Believers are rich beyond measure.  We are blessed with every spiritual blessing. We are chosen, predestined, adopted, and accepted in His beloved embrace.  We have redemption and the forgiveness of sins.

Instead of counting our money we should be counting our blessings.  The riches of God’s children include our spiritual treasures, our families, and the people who are part of our lives.  The stock market may crash.  Our money may run out.  Even our car may be repossessed.  But the blessing of the Lord makes us truly rich.
