Faith on Trial

When a trial is held, evidence is sought to prove the guilt or innocence of the defendant.  Evidence from DNA, video footage, and fingerprints are often used.  However, one of the greatest sources of evidence comes from witnesses.

We believe in Christ by faith.  However, this faith is not blind.  The evidence for Christianity is overwhelming. God has given us several witnesses to show us that Jesus was really God’s Son and really did die on the cross for our sins.  John calls these witnesses to the stand in 1 John 5:9,10 when he says: “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son”.

Our faith is built upon many infallible proofs (Acts 1:3).  The New Testament scriptures are a reliable source for Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.  So many manuscripts are available making it the best-attested book of all and historically reliable.  The existence of Jesus is validated by non-biblical historians like Tacitus and Josephus.  Archaeological findings continue to align with biblical records.  The empty tomb is a significant piece of evidence of Christianity, since Jesus’s enemies failed to produce his body and stop the movement.  Eyewitness accounts of seeing Jesus after His death validify His resurrection.  He was seen by 500 at one time. One of the greatest pieces of evidence of Christianity’s truthfulness is the change in the disciples.  They go from cowering in fear prior to His death, to boldly preaching to all the world that He is alive.  They would not have died for a lie.  Fulfilled prophecies stand as another evidence of the truth of Christianity.

The Apostle John calls another witness to the stand to prove that Jesus comes from God and is the Savior.  It is us.  We have the witness in ourselves.  We who have been changed by His grace can testify with the hymnwriter: “You ask me how I know He lives; He lives within my heart”.
