Jesus, the Light of the World

One year our family was putting up our Christmas tree and had all of the decorations scattered across the room. After getting the tree aligned straight in the stand, our next task was stringing the lights on the tree. As we finally got the lights strung, we plugged them in and nothing happened. After checking to see that each bulb was screwed in properly, we tried again and still nothing. We discovered that one of the bulbs was burned out and the circuit was interrupted. Back then, if one of the lights was burned out nothing worked.
Christmas is all about Jesus. He is the Light of the World. Without Him, Christmas doesn’t really work. The Bible focuses on Jesus being the light. He is the light of salvation. John 8:12 tells us: “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life”. People in the whole world are lost in the darkness of sin. He is the Light, when we believe in Him as our Savior, we too have His light.
He is also the light of direction. This world is a very dark place. There are many dangers, detours, and deceptions. But we do not have to wander aimlessly trying to figure out how to live, what to believe, and which way to go. Jesus shines the light on the pathway of our life through His Word so that we do not walk in the dark, but in the light.
Jesus also is the light of eternity. We read in the book of Revelation 21:23 these words: “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. In the eternal city of heaven there is no night, it is continuously illuminated by Jesus the Light of the World.
Without Jesus, we would be lost in the darkness of our sins, and we would be confined to a place that is called outer darkness. Thank God, Jesus is the Light of the world.
