Kept Secure

I was visiting a friend recently and was not able to get through her gated community because I didn’t have the code.  Security is a pressing concern among people nowadays.  We spend a lot of money on ways to keep ourselves and our properties from being exposed to those who would do us harm.  We use security cameras, locks, fences, and guard dogs.  Some people even choose to carry a handgun to protect themselves.  There are evil people in this world, and it is a smart thing to be as secure as possible.

What about our spiritual security?  The Bible talks about our three enemies: the world, our sinful flesh, and the Devil.  1 John 5:18-19 exposes our enemies with these words: “We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one”.  Sin wants to destroy us, Satan wants to sift us, and the world wants to control us.  Our only protection is to be born of God.  When we trust Christ as our Savior we are described as being in both our Savior’s hands and our Father’s hands (John 10:28,29).  No one is able to pluck us out of His hands.  We are eternally secure as far as our salvation is concerned.  1 John 5:18 blesses us with the reminder that the Wicked One cannot touch us without Christ’s permission.  The Devil even had to ask God before He could make Job sick.  Jesus told Peter that the Devil wanted to sift him, but I (Jesus) prayed for him.  The world is under Satan’s sway.  We are of God and have overcome the world.  It has lost its power over us.

I love that old hymn that says: “More secure is no one ever than the loved ones of the Savior. Neither life nor death shall ever from the Lord His children sever”.  Be sure that you are secure in the hands of the Savior, not trapped in the embrace of the Wicked One.
