The Light Is On

Hurricane Ian blew our church steeple off the building.  It was damaged beyond repair, and over two years later we were finally able to get a new one placed on the top of our church.  In the process of erecting the steeple we also had a light installed in the cupola.  It took a while to get the light working along with a timer that caused it to shine at night.  The day came when the light came on and our church people rejoiced that it was shining brightly as a beacon in the darkness.

Jesus has called His people to be a light in the darkness.  His words come to us from Matthew 5:14-16: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven”.

When the world looks at us, can they see that the light is on?  Can they see Jesus from the reflection of a Christlike character.  Can they see His joy, His peace, and His love in us?  Do we glow with the light of Jesus reflected in our lives?  When the world listens to us, can they hear His truth and the gospel message from our lips?  We dare not hide the best news the world ever heard under a basket.  When the world watches our actions can they see the light of deeds of kindness done for those around us?  The Bible says that when they see our good works they will glorify our Father in heaven.

When I drive by the church at night it makes me rejoice that the light in the steeple is on.  However, it is much more important that our light is on.  May the world see Jesus reflected in our character, in our verbal witness, and in our good deeds for others.
