The Old Road Map

Updated: May 1, 2023

Every summer our family enjoyed a vacation to various states. In preparation for the road trip I would make sure that I had the latest edition of Rand McNally’s road map. I would trace the states we would travel through, locate the rest areas, and determine how far we would be able to travel before we had to find a place to sleep. I still have a beat up copy of that old road map that I treasure. Of course the paper map is considered outdated, unnecessary and “old school”. With the advances in GPS technology and cell phones that will even verbally tell you directions, the old paper maps are becoming obsolete. The old road map is being replaced by more modern technology.

It seems to me that there is another old road map that people are trying to replace with modern philosophies. The old road map is the Bible, God’s Holy Word. Instead of following the well-marked paths in God’s Word people today demand a modern replacement. They listen to the various philosophies of the world that throw out the clear teachings of the Bible. The current culture of the day maps out a new view of sexual morality, a different understanding of marriage, and an alternative path regarding gender. These new maps that come to us from every angle are designed by the Devil. Eph. 2:2 tells us: “In which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience”. If we choose to follow these maps we will end up in a ditch. God’s road map, the Bible lays out for us a clear course on how to become a child of God. It also traces the best path through the trials and troubles of this world. The Bible shows us how we can live a life pleasing to God and then tells us clearly about our ultimate destination of heaven.

Modern technology in mapping is here to stay and is very helpful. However if you want to navigate an exciting and fulfilling road trip through this life you will have to consult the “old road map” of God’s Word.
