Abraham prayed earnestly for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. He petitioned the Lord not to destroy the cites if there would be 50 righteous people who lived there. In the process of his prayer his requests continued until the Lord agreed that if there were even 10 righteous in the cities, He would not destroy them. God’s mercy searched through the cities and only Lot and his family were spared. Fire and brimstone destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Genesis 19:27-29 records what Abraham did next: “And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD. Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace”. Abraham reflected as he watched the smoke of Sodom.
What lessons can we learn from the smoke of Sodom? The first important lesson is that our Lord is a God of justice. He cannot wink at sin. The Bible records that the outcry of wickedness came up before the Lord. The flagrant immorality had spread like a cancer over the entire society. God is holy and His justice is sure. Evil and wickedness will be punished. The flood of Noah’s day, the plagues upon Egypt, and the existence of an eternal hell are all examples of God’s justice. Every person and every society must seriously consider their ways. The smoke of Sodom also reminds us that our Lord is a God of Mercy. The angels were sent to Sodom to confirm the depth of wickedness. God’s mercy was seen when the angels rescued Lot from the flames. I am so glad that all those who have put on Christ’s righteousness are likewise a recipient of God’s amazing mercy. Finally, we learn that our Lord is a God hears our prayers. God listened and would have answered Abraham’s prayer if only 10 righteous were found. The Bible tells us that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
God’s justice is sure, do not presume. God’s mercy is real, do not miss it. God answers our prayers, never stop praying for your Sodom.
