Falling Back

It is that time of year again when most of the country turns their clocks back an hour and goes off Daylight Savings Time.  For four months of the year, we will revert back to Standard Time.  Despite a push in Congress to keep Daylight Savings Time permanently, the proposal has stalled and most Americans are on track to turn their clocks back again this year.  That means we will gain an extra hour as we fall back.

Falling back is a part of our life when it comes to time change.  But it doesn’t have to be true in our spiritual lives.  We do not have to fall back into the old ways of behaving. Those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus should continue to grow and make progress in our walk with the Lord.  In Ephesians 4:13-15 the Bible exhorts us to make progress and not be tossed about and fall back like children. It says: “Till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ”.  Instead of falling back into our old sinful ways we are to move forward toward spiritual maturity.  We have within us the power of the Holy Spirit who gives us the strength to keep us from falling back.  The Bible says “…greater is He who is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

For four months of the year most of the country falls back into Standard Time. We who know Christ do not have to fall back for four months or even for four minutes.  We should remain consistently walking with Him day by day, hour by hour.  Instead of Daylight Savings Time, we live on Jesus Saving Time year-round.

Counting Our Riches

Perhaps we don’t like to admit it but most of us enjoy counting our money. We often take stock of what we have. We rejoice when our 401K is doing well. We are thankful for the property we possess.
