Time to Fight

America was very hesitant in entering World War II. The devastation of World War I, and the effects of the Great Depression brought about an isolationist spirit held by most Americans. All of that changed when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. America was attacked and was now at war. It was now finally time to fight.

The Israelites had escaped Egypt and were marching toward their Promised Land. They were not trained warriors and were preoccupied with just surviving in the desert. When they were on their way the people of Amalek attacked them from behind. Moses instructed Joshua to take some men and go and engage Amalek in battle. Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to a mountain overlooking the battlefield. As Joshua used the sword, Moses lifted his rod in the air. As long as Moses’ hands were held aloft Israel prevailed, but when his hands grew weary Amalek got the advantage. So, Aaron and Hur helped hold Moses’ hands up and Joshua was able to defeat Amalek in a great victory.

Like it or not, we as believers are engaged against a formidable enemy. Our spiritual warfare is against the devil. He uses the world system and our own sinful flesh as his allies. We are called to fight. In Eph. 6:10-11 we are told: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil”. Our great enemy tempts us to sin just as he tried to tempt our Lord. We must resist him, stand strong against these temptations, and put on our spiritual armor if we are going to win these battles. Moses also teaches us that victory in this kind of battle requires a persistent position of prayer. As long as our hands are raised in prayer, we too will win the battle.

We are at war, but our weapons are spiritual weapons. We must fight with the sword of courageous resistance and the rod of continuous prayer. Child of God it is time to fight!
